How many hours a day and a week?
Working time limits.
What the law says
- Normal working time cannot exceed 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week; a collective agreement can set less (Art. L. 211-5).
- The absolute maximum is 10 hours a day and 48 hours a week (Art. L. 211-12).
- In some sectors set by regulation, 12-hour days can be allowed, as long as the week stays at 40 hours actually worked (Art. L. 211-12).
Watch out for
- Anything above normal time is overtime: see the guide “Overtime”.
